Reinforced book style box

Hello and thanks for joining me.

I didn’t know what to call this type of box but it reminds me of a hardback book where the pages inside are slightly smaller than the cover. The cover of my box is bigger than the actual box part inside…

I made this one in Night of Navy card, with See A Silhouette designer series paper first and then decided that I’d make another one in Blueberry Bushel with the fabulous Noble Peacock foiled papers…

I can’t decide which one I prefer! What about you? Leave me a comment below to let me know.

These boxes would be lovely for a little jewellery gift wrapped in tissue paper but I added some glittery tea lights to mine…

To make these you’ll need the following pieces:

  • Card for the cover measuring 8 inches by 3 & 3/4 inches. Score the long side at 3 & 1/2 inches and 4 & 1/2 inches. Round all corners.
  • Card for the reinforced tray measuring 7 & 1/4 inches by 7 & 1/4 inches. Score at 1 inch and 2 inches on each of the 4 sides.
  • Card for the inside of the lid measuring 3 & 1/2 inches by 3 & 1/4 inches
  • 2 pieces of DSP for the front and back that each measure 3 & 1/2 inches by 3 & 1/4 inches
  • 3 pieces of DSP for the sides of the tray measuring 3 inches by 3/4 of an inch
  • 1 piece of DSP for the edge of the cover measuring 3 & 1/2 inches by 3/4 of an inch
  • Ribbon
  • Decorations of your choice

To make the box you need to burnish all the score lines and on each long side cut up the score lines to the second horizontal score line. Cut the tabs as shown below…

Add glue to your tabs and the the outer rectangles as shown below and fold the small tabs in to form right angles and then fold the rectangles down to cover the tabs and reinforce the sides…

For the cover you need to add your ribbon to the inside. I used tear and tape to keep it in place and then covered one side with the extra piece of card (remember to round the corners to match the outside of the cover)…

Then you glue the bottom of your tray to the other side of the cover and then glue the back to form the ‘spine’ of your book…

You can choose to add your DSP panels before you assemble the box or afterwards. You need to add 3 panels to the sides of your tray as well as the 3 parts for the cover. You’ll need to round your corners to match the card.

Pop in your gift and tie the ribbon to keep it closed…

I didn’t want to add too much decoration as I didn’t want to cover up the beautiful DSP.

I stamped the Thank You from the Magnolia Blooms onto Whisper White card and used the Layering Circle dies to cut it out. I cut a larger scalloped circle from Noble Peacock foil sheet for one box and Gray Granite card (to match my ribbon) for the other one. I added some Noble Peacock rhinestones or silver Metallic Pearls for just that little bit of extra bling.

I hope you’ve enjoyed today’s project and will be tempted to give it a go.

I’ve listed the Stampin’ Up! products I used for each box below. You can click on any of the links if you’d like to purchase any of the supplies.

Happy crafting,

Heather x
